Many students ask us how practical work fits into our Garden School courses. We recognise that learning about gardening and horticulture is much easier, and makes more sense, when you can see how things work in a practical situation. For this reason, all of our courses have a very practical focus, and show you how to apply the new ideas you are learning in real situations. Many new students tell us that they are already using their new knowledge in their own garden or allotment. Each course also contains many optional practical exercises that are designed to be easy to complete at home. Examples include: testing soil type using a feel test, and redesigning a garden border. These exercises can help to make your learning more meaningful and relevant.
As always, if you get stuck or feel uncertain about any aspect of your coursework, your tutor is on hand to answer queries or offer advice. Tutors can be contacted at any time if you have any questions or there is anything you are not sure about.
Tutors can also offer advice on finding work experience or voluntary work relevant to your career goals.
You can also join the garden school's informal student support group for extra advice, help and mutual support. Your tutor will provide information about this on enrolment.
